Can you do Low Voltage Rescue (LVR) online?

Written by Ryan Senn ·

No. You can’t complete a Low Voltage Rescue (LVR) course fully online. The rescue and the CPR both have to be practised and assessed in person, so every LVR & CPR course includes a face-to-face practical session.

Some providers offer a blended course, where you complete theory modules online before a shorter practical session. Others, including Tradie Training, do everything face-to-face on the day. Here’s how the two compare and what to check before you book.

Why LVR can’t be done online

The LVR unit, UETDRMP018 - Perform rescue from a live low voltage panel, requires you to show that you can:

  • Identify hazards, assess the risks and apply control measures
  • Identify the isolation point
  • Confirm the voltage and the safe approach distance
  • Inspect the rescue equipment and fit rescue PPE
  • Perform a rescue from a live low voltage panel

The unit’s assessment conditions say this must be assessed in a real workplace situation, or in simulated conditions with realistic activities that replicate the workplace, using equipment and PPE currently used in industry. You can’t do that through a screen.

The same goes for CPR. To be assessed in HLTAID009 - Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation, you must perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an adult manikin on the floor, in front of an assessor.

If a provider offers an LVR certificate with no hands-on assessment, don’t book it. Check that the provider is a Registered Training Organisation with UETDRMP018 on its scope at training.gov.au.

Blended vs face-to-face LVR courses

Face-to-face Blended
Before the course Nothing Online theory modules, usually 30 minutes to 2 hours
On the day Training and assessment, usually 2.5 to 4 hours A shorter practical session and assessment
If you don’t finish the online part Not applicable You may not be able to attend, or your certificate may be delayed
Certificate Nationally recognised Nationally recognised

Both are valid, as long as the course is delivered by a Registered Training Organisation and the practical is assessed in person. Which one suits you comes down to preference:

  • Face-to-face suits you if you’d rather turn up and get it all done in one go, without logging in to modules after work.
  • Blended suits you if you’d rather spend less time at the venue and don’t mind doing the theory first.

Is a blended LVR course nationally recognised?

Yes. A blended course leads to the same Statement of Attainment as a face-to-face course, as long as the provider is a Registered Training Organisation and assesses the rescue and CPR in person. Employers and the Electrical Safety Office look at the unit codes on your certificate, not how the theory was delivered.

How often do I need to do it?

Every 12 months. Safety observers must have been assessed as competent in rescue and resuscitation within the previous 12 months, and most employers ask for LVR & CPR every year. Read more about LVR & CPR renewal in Queensland.

Our LVR & CPR course: no online study

At Tradie Training, everything is done face-to-face. There’s no online theory to complete first. You turn up, your trainer walks you through the rescue procedure, you practise with a low voltage rescue kit, and then you’re assessed on the rescue and CPR. It takes 2.5 hours, costs $119 for both units, and your Statement of Attainment is emailed to you straight after the course.
